Practical Musician: Finding an instructor

Filed under: Music in General — admin @ 6:45 pm

This wonderful article answers many of the questions I’ve been getting in email from would-be strings students about finding a teacher. My first instructor was the only one I could find and he didn’t play ‘cello - he played violin. Needless to say, I got some incorrect techniques I’m still unlearning now. The article helps you find the “right teacher in five steps.” Can it be done? I don’t know.

I’m happy with my current instructor, and he displays a lot of the characteristics this article says you should look for. So, there’s definately something to this article’s advice. I wish that I had known of it before I began taking lessons from a violinist! :)

Baroque & Transitional & Modern… Oh my!

Filed under: Music in General — admin @ 3:39 pm

Sometimes, you stumble on a site that just takes your breath away with what they do. Today, I had my breath pleasantly stolen from me! I was looking for some sites that I like the design of and found Ralph Ashmead’s bow site. Lovely gems!!

Celloslavakia.com

Filed under: Music in General — admin @ 10:30 am

I was listening to From The Top the other night on KBPS 89.9, when I first heard a tenatious 12-year old cellist, Tessa Seymour. She played Dumky, Piano Trio, op.90, no.6, in e minor by Dvorak with the Luna Trio at Carnegie Hall.

Toward the end of the Trio’s time on stage, not only did she kiss the host, Christopher O’Riley, but she also shared her website with everyone listening: Tessa of Celloslavakia. Well. I loved the whole idea of the site and have decided, building upon her inspiration, to build a site with all the resources I have here (and more!) at a new domain name, Celloslavakia.com! Of course, while I’m building, I’ll keep everything I’ve got on my site status quo and continue to update it. But watch for the new location and interface!
