Possible ‘cello instructor?

Filed under: Celli — admin @ 7:54 am

Ohhhh! A maybe possible lead on an instructor came into my email box this morning… S/He lives in Mosier, and, as you can tell from my lack of gender knowledge, I know nothing more than the person lives in Mosier, teaches and plays ‘cello!

I forwarded all my information to one of their associates, Greg. So. HOPE with me!!

.

.

Update: Well, this one didn’t work out. The person he was referring to was my first instructor. He did a good job as a starting place, but he plays violin. Violinists, I discovered, don’t teach ‘cello very well. I had to unlearn :( most of what he taught me. It was a great possibility and I was decidedly looking forward to it, but it’s for naught.

So, what do I really want? What am I looking for in an instructor? I’ve had plenty of time to think about that. First, I’m looking for someone who plays the ‘cello him/herself. Second, I don’t want to learn the “Suzuki Method.” It’s a method, but it’s not heart. It’s sort of like learning to drive on those simulators - it just can’t compare to real driving. There’s similarities, it’s just not …*real.* Third, I’d like someone who doesn’t mind also teaching my niece when she comes up for visits. The last main point I’m looking for is a good personality match. Maybe that’s just unreasonable. After all, had that been a point for any of Beethoven’s students, he wouldn’t have been able to teach them!

The rest of the stuff I’m interested in is really about location and hours - I already drive SO much, I don’t want to add to the driving during the week. I want to fit my lesson into my current drive schedule along my route to work in Vancouver.

Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association

Filed under: Music in General — admin @ 1:22 pm

Now, that’s a mouthful! However, now that I’m back in the Columbia Gorge, I’m looking for a ‘cello instructor and am just not having any luck finding one! I thought I’d poke at this Association and see what there is to see (or hear)…

Wish me luck!

Bowing woes be gone

Filed under: Celli — admin @ 9:42 am

I’ve cringed a couple of times when an instructor wanted to put tape on either a cello or bow (mine or D’s) and thought, “There’s got to be a better way.” Well, for the bow, there is. I’ve just ordered Bowstopper, so I really can’t speak for it yet, but keep watching this blog and I’ll let you know how it goes. I promise. I don’t often blog here, but I do when I have something to say about my chosen topic.

Cheers!

Rastrelli Quartet

Filed under: Music in General — admin @ 10:19 am

I listen to classical music nearly all day long (from the internet at work via All Classical from KBPS). I was listening to Performance Today, with host Fred Child last night and discovered a wonderful quartet.
Fred Child mentioned and played two songs by the Rastrelli Quartet. If you’ve not heard them yet, go listen to a few of their songs. It seems a bit too perfect for the Jazz songs they’re playing, but it gives the “new” sound a certain level of interest that nothing else has. If nothing else, it’s different and that makes it enjoyable!
